Divas in Brazil

Divas in Brazil is a book written by Evanio Alves and is in Portuguese. I recently stumbled across this three page article about the book. At the end of the article it mentions that the book will arrive through amazon shortly so that makes me wonder if they may release an English edition. Which would be nice because surprise surprise, the reason I mention this book at all, is because there is mention of the gorgeous Jayne and her trip to Brazil.

This months edition of Lithuanian Cosmopolitan features an article on Jayne Mansfield. The article is titled "The Woman Struck the World - Jayne Mansfield". It appears to be a short article but it is nice to see that she is still featuring in magazines.

Jaynie's Pink Palace Book Review: "Tashinesque - The Hollywood Comedies of Frank Tashlin"

I have just finished reading Tashlinesque and I admit I was incredibly impressed with this book. The author, Ethan de Seife takes a scholarly look into the life's work of Frank Tashlin. Beginning with his early career as a cartoonist, how he evolved into a motion picture director and how he directed many talented comedians like Bob Hope, Jerry Lewis, Tony Randall and of course Jayne Mansfield, and ending with his decline in popularity which lead to his retirement. This is not a biography at all. It is a very well written in depth look into the films he created. The book describes in detail the many gags and in some instances entire key scenes from his films. But enough of that, I'm sure the part you are wanting to hear most about is the Jayne Mansfield chapter, and yes there is a whole chapter devoted to his work with Jayne on what is commonly considered his best films ever "The Girl Can't Help It" and "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter".

According to the author Jayne Mansfield's work with Frank Tashlin is not only her career making performance but also her finest, something I don't disagree with and I'm sure most other Jayne fans would agree with also. The chapter describes how Jayne Mansfield was the perfect vehicle for Tashin's style. It also compares her comedy work in the two Tashlin movies to her earlier non comedy films. The meaning and comedy behind many scenes is discussed including 'the stink' scene from TGCHI when Jerri tells Mr Murdoch she stinks over and over again while pushing her chest forward so much as to make Fats take a step back, 'the towel' scene from WSSRH in which Jayne uses her voice to comedic effect by changing her voice and tone. All the gags from TGCHI are mentioned including the Milk Bottles, Jayne hiding behind a shrub to change which does not hide her at all, the breakfast scene where only Jayne's torso is in camera view, the delivery man who melts a huge block of ice with his hands, the milk mans bottle of milk exploding and an on lookers glasses shattering. Tashlin's troubles with the censors and the measures he took to make sure his favorite scenes were kept while making Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter is also discussed in length.

All in all, I really enjoyed the book. It may not be the type of book for everyone however being a Jayne Mansfield fan I think that most would enjoy the chapter on the Mansfield movies. Perhaps if you are a fan of Hope or Lewis you will enjoy those chapters also. I found it interesting to finally get a look into the mind of a funny man whose work is sadly not well recognised these days.

Tashlinesque: The Hollywood Comedies of Frank Tashlin

 So the date of release for the first book of 2012 featuring Jayne Mansfield has arrived. I am currently waiting for my copy of Tashlinesque: The Hollywood Comedies of Frank Tashlin to arrive at more doorstep. I am very eager to read this book, it seems very interesting and it features Jayne and Tom Ewell from a scene in the Girl Can't Help It on the cover. I'll be reading my copy the minute it arrives and Ill let you know what I think of it.

Upcoming Jayne Mansfield Documentary

I've just heard from a friend that this is a new Documentary on Jayne's 1967 stay in Europe which is due to be released in the UK for an upcoming Jayne Mansfield DVD box set. Looks very interesting and I look forward to seeing it. I wonder what the box set will be like and if it will feature different titles than the 3 DVD USA box set.

Here is a very interesting short clip promoting a documentary on legendary German photographer Robert Lebeck. Mariska Hargitay Wearing her Mothers Wedding Gown

In 1983 when Mariska Hargitay was a mere 18 years old she entered in the Miss California Beauty Pageant. She represented Miss Beverly Hills and came fourth runner up. At the end of the pageant was the evening gown moment and for the special occasion Mariska wore an item of clothing dear to her heart. She wore Jayne's wedding gown from her marriage to Mickey (also her G.C.H.I costume). Mariska looks simply stunning in her mothers wedding dress. I can picture Mickey and Ellen sitting in the audience proud of their young girl, and Jayne not missing a moment, watching over her baby with overwhelming pride.

Jaynie's Pink Palace Book Review : SEXBOMB "THE LIFE AND DEATH OF JAYNE MANSFIELD"

Sexbomb is like no other book you will find on Jayne Mansfield. It is not a biography like all the others. It is an A-Z of Jayne's life in her own words. The author starts off with a lovely introduction and even describes his own memories from when he saw Jayne perform live back in the 60's. Also included in the book are a list of books written about Jayne with small descriptions, a small selection of magazine covers, a full length interview with Jan Cremer from Playboy magazine on the subject of Jayne, a list of her films with running times, credits and descriptions,  a list of 22 Queen, Miss & Princess titles given to Jayne, a list of Jayne's records, a list of Jayne's television appearances, a list of Jayne's theatre appearances and at the end a very short time line of the major occurrences in Jayne's life. This is defiantly a wonderful book to have because to add to all the amazing features I just mentioned above, the book is filled to the brim with wonderful and very rare images of Jayne. This book is probably the closest to a photography book on Jayne there is, even though the pages aren't glossy, its not hardcover and all the photos are in black and white. Sexbomb was originally released in dutch and later translated into English, of course something I sure am glad happened.

Sexbomb can sometimes be a little pricey, however if you keep an eye out it can also sometimes be cheap. I suggest you grab yourself a copy if you don't already have one.

Jaynie's Pink Palace Book Review : ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF GIRLIE MAGAZINES

I fell in love with the cover of this book the moment I saw it. And I was quite fortunate to snag a copy for $5. The cover is baby pink and has a negligee clad Jayne Mansfield, what is not to love.

The book starts off with drawn images from the 1800's featured from the Police National Gazette and continues through to the pin up era and ends with the 70's and 80's, which I personally don't find artistic at all but it is a book about men's magazines through the ages so I suppose there is no reason not to feature that section in the book. The book features three images of Jayne, one small image near the beginning and two other images which take up a two page spread. There is nothing fantastic about the book other than the cover. It isn't glossy but there are colour images. It is a nice book to have and the pink looks good on the shelf. It is also interesting to read about how far men's magazines have come, that part I won't deny I enjoyed. I do recommend this book however there are better books out there on the subject of men's magazines.

Jaynie's Pink Palace Book Review : VA-VA-VOOM

Va-va-voom is an excellent book. The first thing about it that caught my eye was that she was on the front cover, and I can't say no to a book darling Jayne is on the cover of. Va-Va-Voom is extremely glossy, I love the pages, they are top quality. The images in the book are mostly cheesecake. It features both black and white and colour photos. There are a handful of Jayne images including one of her New Years promotional shots where she is making a toast with a clock in the background, the image of Jayne where she is sitting on top an orange Lincon Premier out the front of her Mansfield Madness house, one of her promo shots for 4th of July sitting on a large top hat, and three other full page images including the same image as on the cover.

I love to look at pin up photos so even though this book only has a little on Jayne, it was an absolute delight from start to finish. There isn't  alot of writing, just mostly images. It is a great coffee table book and once again a must for your collection.

Jaynie's Pink Palace Book Review : HOLLYWOOD BABYLON 1 & 2

Hollywood Babylon is no doubt a cult classic.There are plenty of books out there that strive to be a lot like this but in my opinion this is it. There are no other morbid Hollywood books as great as this one. If you love to read about the crazy scandals from old Hollywood than this book is for you. There are some very grotesque images used in this book so if you can't handle death images than this is defiantly not for you. Hollywood Babylon features Jayne Mansfield on the cover, One full page image of Jayne in the bath while filming 'Rock Hunter', A two page photo of the famous car crash image showing the mangled car with a males body on the floor near by and Jayne's body laid out on the side of the road underneath a white sheet with her bloody arm and a boot showing, also on Jayne there is a two page sized image of Jayne's poor little dead dog amongst Jayne's mangled bloody wig, smashed wine bottles and blood running down the side of the car.

Hollywood Babylon 2 is quite a lot like the first, exploring different stories and giving more details on certain stories already featured in the first. There is chapter on Marilyn Monroe and another on James Dean if you are fans of them also. The book has an overweight Liz Taylor on the cover. Jayne is featured once in this book, in a two page length photo during the filming of Promises Promises, Jayne is nude in the image, has one leg propped up on the side of the bath and is showing her pubic hair.

These are great books and I highly recommend them. I love the trashy Hollywood books and these two are defiantly must haves if you are like me. The great thing about these books is that they arn't rare and can be very cheap. I got both of mine for $1 each.

Hard to believe it's February already. What is there to look forward to in February?, why Valentine's day of course. I often wonder what Valentine Day would have been like for Jayne. What she did, who she spent them with. I'm sure she would have had some Divoon V-Days. I imagine Mickey would have spoilt her rotten too.

She makes such lovely clothing. Alot of her items are inspired by famous 50's sexbombs. There is quite a lot of Marilyn Monroe styled clothing and I have noticed a few Jayne items too. At the moment you can order a custom made yellow bathing suit from the girl cant help it and not too long ago she was selling reproductions of the navy blue 'milk bottle scene' dress.

I think that supporting a one man show like this rather than always buying from the bigger companies (like the bettie page clothing line and others like that) is a wonderful thing to do. Jayne Mansfield granted divorce in Juarez

Jayne Mansfield arrived In El Paso today accompanied by a handsome, dark companion, Nelson Sardelli, and declined to comment on a new romantic interest.
She arrived for a quickie Juarez divorce from muscleman husband Mickey Hargitay.
Wearing a simple yellow dress, brown sable stole and carrying a tiny Chihuahua dog, the glamorous actress said it wouldn't be proper for her to say if she has a romantic interest in anyone right now.
"The reason is, I'm still married," she said.
Sardelli, who was described as her announcer, was extremely attentive to Miss Mansfield.
He wouldn't comment on a rumored romance.
But others in the party hinted that Sardelli is indeed a current romantic interest.
Miss Mansfield was asked if she would marry again.
"Sure," she said. "I can't say definitely now. But in the future I certainly hope to.” Miss Mansfield didn’t say whom she might marry.
Miss Mansfield said she and Mickey, her husband, of five years, could not live harmoniously together.
“Last May I filed suit for the first time in California,” she said. “My husband asked me to withdraw it. So I did.” She explained she went to Rome to make a movie, called “Panic Button.”
While she was in Rome, she filed for a separation suit, but later returned to Mickey.
“Our paths in life might be smoother separately,” she said. “It is better for our children than for us to stay together not in harmony.”
She explained her first suit charged “cruelty,” she said. “I have nothing but respect and admiration for Mickey and I wish him all the success in the world.
“But if you can’t get along together, there is no reason for continuing the marriage.”
She said she does not blame the movies or our careers in the movies for the break in the marriage.
“It’s as easy to be happy in Hollywood following a career there as it is for a bus driver and his wife to be happy anywhere,” she said.
Miss Mansfield has two children by Hargitay. They are Miklos, 4, and Zoltan, 2. The children are with Miss Mansfield’s mother, Mrs. Harry Peers in Dallas. Her daughter Jayne Marie, 12, is in Los Angeles with her first husband, Paul Mansfield.

Today is Mariska Hargitay's Birthday. She is such a lovely, beautiful and talented woman. I just know Jayne would be proud of her, and her four other bright children too. And of course the many grandchildren Jayne sadly never had the chance to meet. Happy Birthday Marish HUGS AND KISSES

Jaynie's Pink Palace Book Review : PINK GODDESS "THE JAYNE MANSFIELD STORY"

If I had to pick my own favourite biography on Jayne Mansfield than Pink Goddess is it. Pink Goddess is an older book like most other Jayne Mansfield books and it even mentions the decapitation myth as if it were fact but I suppose that is expected with the older books.


Each chapter starts with a quote either by Jayne or about Jayne, which I quite like. There are a few rare images however most are the common studio shots. The cover of the book is just lovely. A beautiful shot of Jayne in blue fur against a red backdrop.

Moving on to the biography content. Pink Goddess paints Jayne in a different light to other biographies. Her flaws are not hidden and also the author gets into other aspects of her life where you won't read in any other book. What I like most about Pink Goddess is it really shows the dark, gloominess that was the last year of her life. You can read alot more about her sordid relationship with Sam Brody. It's not a happy chapter, but its the truth and that's all I care to read about, as I'm sure you do too.

If you manage to come across a copy of this book for a good price I suggest you snap it up. You won't be disappointed. Again, this book is a must have for any Jayne Mansfield lover.

Jayne and Mickey's Wedding Anniversary

Today marks the day of Jayne and Mickey's Wedding in 1958.

54 years ago today the couple were so in love and had the pinkest, most crazy wedding to date.

We've all seen the photos and we've all heard the stories so I won't do a write up on the day, all I will say is simply this. "Rest in piece two beautiful angels. May your friendship last forever within those pearly gates you now reside. The world loves you, will never stop loving you nor will we forget. Happy anniversary Jayne and Mickey, as always - with love".
