Especially for you - because you are so sweet and thoughtful, fondly Jayne
This autographed photo of Jayne is especially unusual because Jayne has inscribed it with a very heartwarming and personal message but there is no name given and she signs it off with only Jayne, not Jayne Mansfield. We would love to know the story behind this autograph if there was one.
Jayne has inscribed it with, "Especially for you, because you are so sweet and thoughtful, fondly Jayne"

Defending Jayne - The Marilyn Monroe Dilemma
There has not been an article pertaining to this subject on this site to date, and with good reason... Us Jayne Mansfield fans simply do not see Jayne and Marilyn as being similar. The only similarities between the two was the fact that they were both blonde bombshells. You might be thinking why this subject is being brought up, and the reason for that being, we are sick of seeing Marilyn Monroe fans always bringing Jayne up in subject and talking about her like all she was was a Monroe clone. They obviously do not know anything about Jayne, or the other blonde bombshells from that era for that matter. So here goes.
In the 1950's one of the most popular subjects to come from Hollywood was the blonde bombshell. She was always glamorous and curvaceous. And more often than not she was softly spoken and told to play dumb. It wasn't only Hollywood, film industries around the world had their own blonde bombshells. There were hundreds of them, there were starlets starting out in the industry, bit players and leading ladies. The blonde bombshell often played the same roles each time especially when starting out in the industry before making their mark and that was the part of a dumb blonde often a mistress, secretary, waitress, floozy, etc. Out of all the blonde bombshells Marilyn Monroe is the most well known, because of this, many Marilyn fans love to go on and on about Jayne (or anyone else who came after her) as being a clone or wannabe. We could not picture anything more ludicrous. Marilyn Monroe did not create the blonde bombshell. The studios did. The studio's came up with the idea and publicity for blonde bombshell long before Marilyn came on the scene. One of the earliest was of course Jean Harlow, most of the blonde bombshells from the 50's era looked up and admired Harlow, mostly because she played thrilling and tantalizing parts and got the chance to portray her acting skills in interesting roles. By the 50's all the studio's wanted the blondes to play was the ditzy bimbo roles. Besides Jayne and Marilyn some of the most well know blonde bombshells were Lana Turner, Betty Grable, Marilyn Maxwell, Anita Ekberg, Mamie Van Doren, Diana Dors, Barbara Nichols, Joi Lansing, Kim Novak, Mae West, Cleo Moore, the list could go on and on. One thing I noticed about Jayne Mansfield fans is that they tend to love all the blonde bombshells, Marilyn fans tend to only like the blondes who came before Marilyn, all the ones who came after her were just wannabes. Kind of a sad perspective as the blonde bombshell phenomenon really thrived in the 40's, 50's and 60's and Marilyn Monroe was only one small part of the whole group.
Majority of the blondes actually only went blonde at the advice of an executive or someone else in the industry who knew what they were talking about. They would see their full figure in all its glory and tell the ladies some story about how they could really sell themselves in the industry if the went the way of the blonde bombshell. Marilyn was advised to change her hair to blonde during her modelling days and in the early stages of her career. Jayne was told the same thing, but here is something I bet Marilyn fans don't care to know before accusing Jayne of being a Marilyn wannabe, when Jayne was at the start of the pursuit of her career (yes at the very same time Marilyn was big and had created a name for herself) Jayne dyed her hair black and hoped for parts of ethnic beauties like Native Americans. That is what Jayne wanted for her career. Jayne was advised to go blonde and project the image of the blonde bombshell so she did just that. Perhaps if Jayne had have stuck with the way she wanted things, she might not have been given a chance and she might not have found her fame. I'm sure that would have been going through her head when she finally decided to go blonde. At the time Jayne was seeking fame as a movie star she was young, married and had a little daughter to care for. Jayne took on paying, respectable jobs like selling door to door and a job as a photographers assistant at Ciro's. Jayne was always a very busy woman. She finished high school and went on to college, she married young and became a mother at 17. She would even take her baby Jayne Marie to class with her when she went to college. She was the queen of multi-tasking. And if wanted something she worked damned hard to get it. Jayne never went the way of the casting couch to find her fame, she wanted to work hard and achieve her dreams by working hard. Jayne discovered that befriending photographers (Frank Worth was a very good friend of Jayne's during her quest to stardom) and newsmen and getting her photo printed in papers as often as she could was her starting ticket. So essentially Jayne went the way of the press and publicity. Marilyn dated people like Joe Schenck and Johnny Hide to help boost her career. Just quickly while we are on that subject I would also like to add that Jayne Mansfield fans love and accept Jayne with all her flaws and inconsistencies, we don't see her as being perfect because she wasn't but we still love her. Marilyn fans tend to overlook Marilyn's flaws, she had many flaws, but instead of accepting Marilyn for all her flaws they pretend she was perfect and never did wrong. I am actually a Marilyn fan as well as a Jayne fan and both women did wrong in their lives. They were not perfect, they were human beings and that is what I love so much about the both of them. So yes I don't judge Marilyn for dating people like Johnny Hyde to further her career, she did what she felt she had to do but I think Jayne was a little wiser in her quest for stardom.
Once Jayne had created her image as the blonde bombshell, she stuck with it for the rest of her life. Even in the late 60's when the trend of the blonde bombshell was fading down, Jayne still felt she owed it to her fans to remain blonde, as they knew her, and as they loved her. Jayne often wore brown wigs to events and for photoshoots, a sure sign that she really did miss being a brunette, but by this stage she had already created a name for herself as the blonde bombshell and did not want to ruin what the world perceived her as. So she made do with temporary outings as a brunette.
Fox obtained Jayne under contract at a time when Marilyn was giving them problems, yes that is true but that does not mean that Jayne ever intended to be Marilyn's replacement. Jayne saw nothing wrong with the studio having two leading blonde bombshells under contract just as Betty Grable saw nothing wrong with it when Marilyn joined the pay role. Marilyn never made a comment about Jayne so it is impossible to know how she felt about her, of course though many Marilyn fans think they know Marilyn personally and that Marilyn would have disliked her. The only known photographs of Marilyn and Jayne (there are 3) were taken before Jayne had made it in Hollywood and before she had signed with Fox. It was during her rein as Broadway queen in New York and the two are at at a Rose Tattoo event, Jayne is shown walking past and popping down to Marilyn's table while she is engaged in conversation with someone else and the third image shows Marilyn posing for the camera with Jayne in the background. What the photos do not show you is what happened next. It doesn't show the two greeting each other or exchanging words which is no doubt what would have happened. The two could have been quite friendly towards one another that night for all we know but the only three images that have ever surfaced from that night shows what looks Marilyn snubbing Jayne. And that is probably the reason why only those three images were printed in the papers and magazines. The press would have loved posting those photos and writing about a rift between the two. Making Jayne look like an avid admirer being snubbed. But I bet you that wasn't the case. Marilyn would have remembered all too well what it was like to be the newbie and I bet you she would have been warm and friendly but of course again, something we will never know, unless more photos from that night surface someday. I remember reading that Marilyn wanted to go and see Jayne's play "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter". And also that Marilyn laughed throughout Jayne and Mickey Rooney's skit at the Golden Globes. It baffles me how certain Monroe fans love to make out that Marilyn disliked Jayne when they couldn't possibly ever know how she felt about her.
Jayne disliked being compared to Marilyn all the time simply because she came after her, but every blonde bombshell had to deal with being compared to who ever came before them, Marilyn included. Marilyn was often spouted as being the next Lana Turner or Jean Harlow. When ever someone became famous they were always printed as being the 'next' somebody. It was a pretty stupid gimmick. Unless it said something like 'Jayne Mansfield is the next Jayne Mansfield' but it never was that way.
Well that was quite a bit lengthier than I thought it would be. My whole point of it though is that Marilyn fans need to stop hating on Jayne when they do not know anything about her. I know not all Marilyn fans treat Jayne that way. I have come across many people who are fans of both lovely ladies. But the ignorant ones who go out of their way to have a go at Jayne need to stop. Running numerous Jayne sites is great, but come on, don't come to our Jayne sites only to rip into her and say things like Marilyn was prettier. People who do that just love starting arguments and are looking for one. I always just delete their comments and don't respond to them directly. Well I guess this post is a response to all of those nasty comments that I have received about Jayne over the years.

Jayne Mansfield at University of North Carolina 18 October 1964
Movies and More rare photograph of Jayne Mansfield and remembrance of her visit to University of North Carolina.
Our MoviesAndMore.tv director, Mike Doares, then a University of North Carolina undergrad, has a vivid recollection of Ms. Mansfield's visit to the University's Chapel Hill NC campus on Sunday
October 18 1964. Ms. Mansfield, who had been appearing in a Greensboro NC night club, visited 800 students to help inaugurate the social program of Morrison Residence Hall, a new UNC men's dormitory.
Mike remembers her charming acceptance of a plaque declaring Ms. Mansfield an Honorary Lifetime House Mother, by assuring the crowd of students that "...and I can cook, too". The event was immortalized by the never-before-published photo shown here. Taken by the late Bill Norment, a friend of Mike's, the photo only came to light recently and shows Ms. Mansfield standing next to the famed UNC Victory Bell.

Jayne Mansfield's Son in Law Peter Hermann Opens Up About his Childhood Sexual Abuse
The latest news to shock the Mansfield/Hargitay community is Mariska Hargitay's husband speaking out for the joyful heart foundation and telling the world that he experienced sexual abuse as a child. The crime committed by a teacher at his school. Mariska has always been the advocate for her foundation and for the first time Peter publicly speaks out about what Mariska is so passionate about. I admire Peter so much more now for supporting Mariska's cause when it must hit deeply home to him. Mariska Hargitay really could not have found herself a better man. In fact he is a lot like Mickey, incredibly caring and loving. You can watch his full speech on the video below.

Memoirs of Jayne Mansfield Airforce Flight by the Pilot
Below is a memoir from John 'Hank' Meierdierck, a very lucky man who had the pleasure of meeting Jayne and flying her to an air-force base in UK. To read the full article follow the link below;
In 1957, Millie and I were transferred to the UK as were most of the other pilots from the U-2 group. While there I got to fly the C-47 to Europe and not much else. But even flying the Gooney Bird can be fun. Working in the Command Post, I controlled the flying hours. So when a request came in to fly Jane Mansfield and a group of reporters to one of our bases for a football game, I okayed it but put my self down as pilot.
The trip up was uneventful in good weather and I got to go to the rear of the plane and talk with Jane for awhile. I guess they all went to a party after the game and the weather turned terrible. Rain, low ceilings and about 1/2 mile visibility. Right after takeoff my copilot went to the rear to meet the people and I was left alone to fly the plane. Not an easy job what with flying in rough instrument conditions and working theradios, etc. A British female reporter came up front and sat in the copilots seat. That was O K but then she began interrupting my concentration by grabbing switches. I told her about three times not to touch anything but when she did it again, I grabbed her someplace on her front area, pulled her out of the seat with my right hand and hollered for the crew chief to get her out of there. The destination was about 200 feet visibility and about 300 foot ceiling but I penetrated OK and landed safely.
Miss Mansfield and her friend, Mickey Haggerty, lived quite close to us in England. I was hosting a small party for members of the old U2 group and invited the two of them for drinks and dinner. They tentively accepted but the day before the planned event, called and declined. It was close though.
The only inconsistency with this story is that Mickey Hargitay was not with Jayne during her 1957 trip to Europe and the UK. The studio would not have it. Jayne didn't even bring Jayne Marie with her. She traveled with Fox Studio employees only. It was one of the only times she done what she was told to do, all other times she did what she wanted.
Our latest video, shared on YouTube, actually coincides with the short little story. It is footage from Jayne's trip to the US Airforce base mentioned. Jayne is shown enjoying an American football match, partaking in some publicity on the field such as kicking the football herself, greeting people at the base and cutting a cake and sharing the pieces with some little children.
And of course here is the mentioned video footage

58 Years Since Jayne's First Appearance on What's My Line
On the 12th of February 1956 Jayne Mansfield appeared on television program What's My Line for the first time. She went on to appear on the show another three times during her career. Jayne was always so funny when appearing on the program. She always put on a phoney voice so well. Anyways in celebration of the 58th anniversary of her appearance here is the clip for your viewing. It never gets old to watch.

Jayne Mansfield and Mickey Hargitay Lost at Sea
On the 7th of February 1962 (52 Years ago today) Jayne Mansfield and Mickey Hargitay were enjoying a day out in the sun on the beautiful waters of Nassau water skiing with hotel promotion man Jack Drury, when a terrible accident took place and their boat capsized. The trio became lost at sea. And spent the night out on a small island. Rescuers located them the following day (8th of February). Reports were quick to suggest that it was all a big publicity stunt or a publicity stunt gone wrong however it is cruel and offensive to even suggest such a thing. Photographs and footage from the rescue are sad to behold. Jayne is clearly in much distress.Upon their rescue Jayne was admitted into hospital and treated for exposure and shock as well as mosquito and sand flea bites. On the 12th of February they returned to Los Angeles where they were reunited with their children, it was a very tearful moment for Jayne. She went through an ordeal impossible to imagine and she made it through with her loving and caring husband by her side.
Jayne and Mickey tell the full story of what happened during the ordeal in their book 'The Wild Wild World of Jayne Mansfield'.
Our latest video tribute on our Jayne Mansfield YouTube channel is a compilation of Jayne and Mickey's rescue. Included is photographs from their happy arrival at Nassau airport prior to the accident, photographs of their rescue from the small island, their boat trip back to shore and leaving the rescue boat and heading for the hospital as well as footage from the rescue boat and a newsreel from the time of the accident. The clip ends with a photo of Jayne getting treatment in hospital and a happy tearful reunion with her beautiful children.
Jayne and Mickey's short time lost at sea would have been hell for them and coming home to reports saying that it was a publicity stunt would have hurt them deeply. Not long after the incident Jayne gave an interview where the reporter asked her if it was indeed a publicity stunt, you could tell she was offended by the accusations but took it all in her stride. Her whole life Jayne was a trooper. She survived through many things, being lost at sea for a night and living to tell about it was one of them.

Modern Family the Latest To Spoof the Famous Jayne Mansfield & Sophia Loren Photo
The title pretty much sums it up. Hit TV show Modern Family is the latest to spoof the very well known image of Sophia Loren eyeing off Jayne Mansfield's chest. However in this photo is it Sophia who is baring the bust. Sophia Vergara portrays Jayne and Julie Bowen poses the part of Sophia Loren. Other well known females who have spoofed the image in the past are Anna Nicole Smith and Heidi Klum.
Rare Footage Inside The Pink Palace
We hope you enjoy the latest short clip of Jayne Mansfield walking around the grounds of the pink palace, welcoming viewers into her home.
Happy Birthday Mamie
We would like to take the time to wish the beautiful buxom blonde, Mamie Van Doren, a very happy birthday. Mamie turns 83 today and looks fabulous for her age. Mamie went with the changing times and she often makes posts on her facebook page and her blog. She is always very kind to her fans and loves to hear from them. Jayne and Mamie worked together on the Film Las Vegas Hillbillys (probably one of Jayne's worse films however both she and Mamie look fabulous in it.) I don't think they were every really close but their paths did cross many times. Here is a gorgeous photo of one of those instances.

Jayne Mansfield in Hamilton, Canada
You might remember a post I made well over a year ago of Jayne in Hamilton, Canada, where she was seen at a radio station. Well here is a photo from that very same day (25th of April 1963). This photo shows Jayne with the Mayor Vic Copps and she is straightening his tie for him.
