Jaynies Pink Palace Book Review: Affectionately, Jayne Mansfield

As a Jayne Mansfield fan, I do my best to get my hands on as many Jayne books as I can. Whether it be a book with Jayne gracing the cover, a small or large chapter featured on Jayne or an entire book devoted to Jayne, I have to have it. Now I've been asked many times before 'how can I read so many books on one person when they're all going to say the same thing?'. Well my answer to that is that I thoroughly enjoy reading different authors perspectives as no two authors will write about her in the same manner. It doesn't bother me one bit that the facts in all the books are the same (as Jayne surely was one very interesting woman), what I care about is the style of the text. And on that note, I must say that Richard Koper has done a wonderful job in bringing a fresh new perspective to the life and talents of Jayne Mansfield. In my opinion, Affectionately Jayne Mansfield is the best book published on Jayne Mansfield since Pink Goddess. The book is extremely well researched, with a large array of books/articles credited in the bibliography. The filmography section of the book is my favourite that I have ever seen in any Jayne book. Rather than a short synphosis on her films the description of each is very detailed and even covers facts on her co-stars and colleagues. Asides from the detailed filmography, also featured in the book is a very well written biography, a chapter on her contemporaries titled Comparison and Competition, numerous black and white photographs, detailed descriptions of her plays and a small section on her more well known tv appearances and finally coming to an end with 26 pages dedicated to something Jayne was proud of so much that she had them hung all over her walls at home, I am of course referring to her magazine covers.

Exterior wise, I love the pink covers. I couldn't think of a more beautiful photo for the front cover. Another thing that gives the book an added little touch is the simple yet pivotal title of 'Affectionately, Jayne Mansfield' as this was a common inscription Jayne would sign for her devoted fans.

I have spoken to other Jayne Mansfield fans/my blog readers and they are also very impressed with this book. I highly recommend 'Affectionately, Jayne Mansfield' for all Jayne Mansfield fans, or to anyone who has never read a Jayne book before, this would be a great book to start with.

Today in 1955 Jayne Mansfield filed a lawsuit of $10,500 for neck and back injuries sustained in a car accident on the corner of Sunset Boulevard and La Brea Avenue in LA on the 10th of April 1954.

The Pink Palace 44 Years Ago

The 5th of August 1968 is the day Jayne's beautiful pink palace was sold for the first time after her death. The house sold for $185,000 and included in the sale was 264 of her personal items which were unable to sell individually at auction. I find it very sad that all those item were not given to her family and just tossed in with the house as a bonus for the buyer.

Favorite Jayne Mansfield Book

In my opinion the best Jayne Mansfield book on the market is Jayne Mansfield A Bio-Bibliography by Jocelyn Faris. It is not your standard biography. Instead it is best suited for anyone wanting to research Jayne in a more in depth manner. I myself am constantly going back to this book when I want to know something specific. This book is the definitive encyclopedia for Jayne Mansfield fans. Like I said, it is not your standard biography, in fact the biography on Jayne inside is very brief however the book has so much more to offer. The chronology is absolutely superb, the amount of research gone into finding the facts will amaze you. Also included in the book is detailed descriptions of Jayne's personal appearances and plays, filmography, television appearances, music recordings, record covers and awards and honors bestowed upon Jayne. My favorite part about this book is the bibliography, this is also the largest content inside the book. The bibliography is full of facts from old newspaper and magazine articles and also mentions books either written about Jayne or which mention Jayne inside. Whats more about this book which I find very handy is the list of magazine covers Jayne has appeared on. Obviously there is a lot missing in this section however I think that because this book was printed in 1994 that there is a lot mentioned for its time. There are a few black and white photographs inside and the cover is actually pretty boring and dull, it appears as if it is missing its dust jacket however this is how it was originally released. The only downfall about this book if you are after a copy is the price tag. I was lucky enough to find my copy for a reasonable price however it usually is sold for around $60 (anyone asking for more is trying to rip you off). If you are able to find a copy for a good price I suggest you pick it up because it is well worth it. I don't know what I would do without this book in my collection because I reply on it so much.

Spectacular ebay find

Currently up for auction on eBay is something I think is truly wonderful. An album photographed and put together by a soldier based in Japan. Featured in the album is a handful of photos of Jayne and Bob Hope performing one of their many skits together. I personally think it is sad when items like this do not stay with the person whose memories created it and their family but in this case I hope the album goes to someone who appreciates it in its entirety.

Jayne Mansfield's Love Heart Seat

Here is a video from the Burlesque Hall of Fame who currently have many wonderful exotic items of burlesque history, including Jayne Mansfield's love heart seat (seen here in video). I hope that they will be able to achieve their goal to display all these wonderful items in their museum rather than have them kept away in storage.

Today marks the 45th Anniversary of Jayne Mansfield's passing. It is a sad day for all of us Jayne fans. I wont write a post about her death as I did that last year and it can still be read if you look through past posts.

Where ever you are Jaynie dear, I hope that you are truely happy. We send you so much love everyday but today more than ever. We miss you dearly and I personally am thinking of you and Mickey spending the day in each others company listening to all the many wonderful heartfelt prayers from your loved ones and fans. We have not forgotten you Jayne, and we never will.
