Mansfield's Madness

So much is always said and written about Jayne Mansfield's famous Hollywood home The Pink Palace but there is not as much talk about her previous home Mansfield's Madness. So I thought I would do a nice lengthy post on Jaynie's very first home she bought herself. So here is the story of the Mansfield's Madness House.

When Jayne and Husband Paul Mansfield first moved to Hollywood from Dallas, Texas in 1954 they rented a small apartment together with their baby daughter Jayne Marie. It wasn't until Jayne inherited $4000 from her grandparents that she decided she wanted to buy her own home. She used the money for a loan on an $18,000 house at 9840 Wanda Park Drive. That house became known as Mansfield's Madness. When Jayne and Paul split, Paul moved back home and Jayne kept the house. The property remained Jayne's while she was away in New York working on the hit Broadway play "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?".When Jayne made her triumphant return to Hollywood in September 1956 the house was waiting for her and her new beau Mickey Hargitay. Jayne, Mickey, little Jayne Marie and their pets the chihuahuas Phillip and Charlessa, the great dane Lord Byron, the scottie Marooney, the toy poodle Mignonella and Zachery the rabbit lived happily in the Mansfield's Madness House until moving out in March 1958 into their new home the Pink Palace. There are thousands of photographs of Jayne, Mickey and Jayne Marie in the Mansfield's Madness House. Plenty of parties and press events where held in the house too. Like little Jayne Marie's Birthday Parties and the 'Christening of the pool' press party Jayne held in September 1957 after Mickey had put in a lovely new swimming pool for the young family (That pool by the way is still there today).

In an article written by Louella Parsons on 30 July 1957 she wrote this about Jayne's house

"A story telephoned to me that Jayne Mansfield had to summon the police to get rid of a man who hung around her house making dire threats, was worth investigating., although at the offset it sounded like a Mansfield publicity yarn. I found that Jayne encourages visitors. She has a huge sign in front of her house saying "Mansfield's Madness," and night and day men, women, and children are standing in front of the place waiting for Jayne's autograph. The studio wishes she wouldn't bring all this trouble on herself, but she's never happy when she isn't attracting a crowd."

The architecture of the house was quite modern for its time. The house is a California bungalow and sits on stilts in the hills. It is a small 2 bedroom by 2 bathroom single family home. When Jayne lived in the house the exterior was covered in hardwood and was quite vibrant and stood out. Since then the exterior of the house has either been painted or remodeled in some other form and does not look as good. It looks pretty dull from the outside to be honest. When Jayne and family moved houses in March 1958 she sold the Mansfield's Madness house for $30,000, the original asking price was $39,500. In an article titled 'Jayne Moves to New Home' printed in the Los Angeles Mirror News it states;

Jayne sells her old home at 9840 Wanda Park Drive complete with furnishings and a lock of her hair to Medhet Mandour, a wealthy Egyptian movie producer for $30,000

The last time the house was placed on the market was in August 2002 and it sold on April 4th 2003 for $739,000, $5000 less than the asking price of $744,000.

And now the part you have been waiting for, the photographs. I have included photos of Jayne at home in the Mansfield's Madness House as well as the photographs taken in 2002 when the house was for sale and images from 2012 google maps.

As you can see when comparing these photos above, the outdoor deck/balcony at the side of the house is now an extension on the house (an added room)

The kitchen cupboards are now lighter and has a

The bedroom has been extended. I think that this could
be where Jayne's outdoor balcony once was. As I
mentioned in the first lot of photos there was very clearly an
extension added.

The side of the house looks a bit different now
The built in bbq is still there in the left hand corner and a

A hedge has been placed in and the animal enclosure is gone
The steps appear to be gone as well

So that was my post about the Mansfield's Madness house. I hope it has given you an in-depth look into the house that Jayne lived in and owned before the Pink Palace and what the house looks like today. It is very sad that the Pink Palace no longer exists but if you are looking at doing some Jayne Mansfield sight seeing in the California area then I would suggest visiting this cute little house at 9840 Wanda Park Drive. I will be doing posts on Jayne Mansfield'd other houses in the near future so keep an eye out for that.

Another Love Letter From Mickey to Jayne

Here is another love letter from Mickey Hargitay to Jayne Mansfield in April 1966. This letter was written the day before the previous love letter and reading it really shows just how much Jayne was on Mickey's mind at the time. He ends the letter with 'love you forever - Mickey'.

Diana Dors 29 Years On

It has been 29 years since the passing of the beloved Diana Dors. I thought I would do a small post with some images of Diana and Jayne to honor the incredible Dorsy as the two meet a few times in the late 60's. The first image is of a screen shot I made from rare footage of the time Diana went backstage at one of Jayne's shows to have a chat. They talked about their kids and Diana was amazed that Jaynie had five babies.

57 Years Ago Today Jayne First Appeared on Person to Person

It was the 4th of May 1956 when Jayne Mansfield first appeared as a guest on Ed Murrow's show Person to Person. Jayne and Jayne Marie sat in their New York apartment while chatting to Ed. They even showed off what ballet moves they had learnt and little Jayne Marie was just too cute. When Ed asked her the names of her pets she said their given names and added Mansfield at the end. The episode is a great piece of television history. The full episode (including the first half being on Mickey Rooney) can be viewed online via the BBC.

Wheels & Dollbaby Dress Inspired by Jayne Mansfield

One of my local designer brands, Wheels & Dollbaby, which I used to wear all the time has finally created a dress inspired by Jayne Mansfield. I don't wear the label so much anymore as my tastes have changed and I like 60's fashion more so than the elegant and polished look that Wheels & Dollbaby have to offer. But it is still a great label and they have such lovely clothes. The Super Dress was inspired by Jayne's role as Jerri in The Girl Can't Help It and the dress she wore in the milk bottle scene. Wheels & Dollbaby have been inspired by many old time glamour girls in the past and what I like best is that they don't rip off the entire design. They make it their own by creating it similar but not the same. As you will see there are similarities between the Super Dress and Jayne's Jerri Jordan Dress.

Super Star Jayne Paper Dolls Review

Today I received my booklet of paper dolls by talented Jayne Mansfield artist Eddie Kent. I have to say it is a work of Jayne Mansfield art. All of the designs are amazing. Eddie really captures Jaynie and her stunning outfits superbly. I am very impressed with the attention to detail with Jayne's outfits, jewellery, shoes, hair..Everything.

Included in the booklet around the paper dolls are quotes (both by Jayne and about Jayne) and some of the many titles that was bestowed upon Jayne during her lifetime. The back cover of the booklet tells the story of how the paper dolls came about and Eddie's journey into creating this wonderful collectors piece.

Eddie's Jayne Mansfield paper dolls are in the process of being picked up by a publishing company so this original handmade paper doll booklet is sure to become a hard to find collectors piece so get in quick while they are still available at http://www.eddiekent.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=23&products_id=137&zenid=59rif4t5c921c4dl4fqjjusje5

Just a couple of pics I took of the adorable paper dolls booklet

30 Day Jayne Mansfield Challenge Final Day The Best Thing About Jayne

The best thing about Jayne Mansfield to me is that she did so many things in such a short life. She accomplished a hell of a lot in 34 years, more than some people get to do in a full life time. And for that she is so unbelievably interesting. She is never considered a dull subject. Everybody loves to talk about Jayne's life and I think that she would be so happy to know that all these years after she left us we still talk about all her adventures and misadventures. She really did leave a mark on this world.

And with that said, Hooray I have completed the 30 Day Jayne Mansfield Challenge. I quite enjoyed doing it and it has been such great fun posting about Jayne every single day. I will continue to post daily as I can see with the drastic climb of hits my page has been getting (over 20,000) in the past month that everyone is enjoying it too.

30 Day Jayne Mansfield Challenge Day 29 Jayne's Best Non-Physical Feature in Your Opinion

Jaynie's heart and soul. She was so caring and compassionate. She had a huge love for all forms of life especially children and animals. She had so much love for her family but she also cared deeply about her fans and she wanted to share as much of herself as she could with her fans. She cared about everyone. She was a saint.

Jayne Mansfield Featured in This Weeks Edition of XL Semanal

Jayne Mansfield is featured in a 6 page spread in Spanish magazine XL Semanal this week. For references the edition is #1331 - 28 April 2013.

30 Day Jayne Mansfield Challenge Day 28 Jayne's Best Physical Feature in Your Opinion

Oh golly this is a hard one to answer as I love absolutely all of Jayne's features and to me she is the most beautiful woman ever. Pin pointing on a few certain area's I'd have to say that I love her lips (she had the perfect pout) and her eyes (the same colour as mine), her legs (she had some killer legs) and of course her skin. Her skin glows and looks so silky soft.

The perfect lips

30 Day Jayne Mansfield Challenge Day 27 Favourite Jayne Quote

I'm not really into the whole quote thing. I think that with many quotes in newspapers and magazine's there is no way of actually knowing whether or  not Jayne said it. I prefer to hear Jayne speak herself in interviews. I like her answer to what sex appeal is to her given in a UK interview. She said;

Sex appeal is a wonderful warm, womanly, healthy feeling.

Jayne Mansfield by Diane Arbus on display at Paris Photo LA

This stunning photo of Jayne Mansfield taken by Diane Arbus in 1965 is on display at Paris Photo LA. As you can see it is a slightly different image to the more well known one which I also posted below.

Mickey's Love Letter to Jayne

Another special treat. A love letter Mickey wrote to Jayne in 1966 and a rare snap of the two. These are extra special. It shows, Mickey really never did stop loving Jayne even when she had stopped loving him. Very tragic but Jayne did have a bit of a messy love life as well all know.

Jayne's Love Note to Sam

Here are two very rare photographs of Jayne and Sam accompanied by a love note Jayne wrote (in her own handwriting) to Sam. The note reads;

To My Samuel
Just because we are now mispochah
I love you
Jayne

I think Jayne was referring to Mishpocheh. A Yiddish word for Family.

No matter what these two went through together (and we all have different opinions about their relationship), they were madly in love as you can see in these photographs and in Jayne's love note.

Jayne Mansfield 1963 at Restaurant in Mexico City

I don't think I have shared this photo and link on here before but it is an old link. There is a fabulous photo of Jayne Mansfield and also one of Marilyn Monroe. It is a shame the photos are small and low quality but they are still lovely. Click the image to take you to the original page.

Spanish Tribute to Jayne

Here is a nice article about Jayne and her recent 80th Birthday. Accompanying the article is a rare photo of Jayne in Spain. Click the photo to see the link.

Jayne Mansfield Signed Gus Steven's Supper Club Program

Check this out. It is a Gus Steven's Supper Club Program signed by Jaynie. Click the image to take you to the original link where you can read a great story of how this came about.

Jayne Mansfield Pic of The Week

Some of you may have already noticed that I added a new feature this week to the blog. I am of course talking about the new page tab at the top left hand side of the page titled 'Pic of the Week'.
Every week I will be adding a new photo of Jayne to the page. I will also be adding more page tabs along the bar so keep an eye out.

I also wanted to make a note that I have defaulted the blog layout to 'magazine' but if you prefer any of the other layouts supplied you can change it for your own viewing using the drop down box.

I adore Jayne's evening gowns from Rock Hunter.

Jayne Mansfield Featured in April Issue of Harper's Bazaar Spain

An 8 page spread on photographer Sid Avery's work in the April edition of Spanish Harper's Bazaar features one of his shot's of our girl Jaynie. My guess is it has something to do with the recent book "Sid Avery - The Art of Hollywood Snapshot"

Jayne by Sydney Band "The Heavies"

Here is a fabulous song which was written for our Jaynie by Aussie band 'The Heavies'. I love it.

Jayne Mansfield and Bernard of Hollywood aka Bruno Bernard

Wouldn't you just love to see a Jayne Mansfield Photography book? I know I sure would. I think that if there was to be a Jayne Mansfield photography book on just one man's photographs than Bernard of Hollywood's would be it. Jayne posed for him many of times and most of his Jayne Mansfield photographs are not even in the public domain. It sure would be spectacular. Here are a few of his most well known Jayne images.

30 Day Jayne Mansfield Challenge Day 25 The Best Jayne Mansfield Television Appearance In Your Opinion

I think that Jayne's appearance in the Alfred Hitchcock Hour (The Hangover) was spectacular, I would have to say that it is my favourite, but I also enjoy her appearances on Follow The Sun (The Dumbest Blonde), Burke's Law and Shower of Stars. As for her appearances and interviews as herself on television programs I quite like the This is your life special, her appearances on What's Your Line, The Jackie Gleeson Show, The Jack Benny Show, Milton Berle Show and The Merv Griffin Show and I recently got to watch Jayne's first appearance on Person to Person which I loved. I am still on a Jaynie high after watching it because it was my first time seeing it. Jayne Marie was being such a cutie and showing off her pets including a pet rabbit called Zachery who she had eat flowers from a vase. Jayne and Jayne Marie also showed Mr Murrow their ballet recital which Jayne Marie had memorized. It was such a lovely segment.

Screen Shot I made of Jayne Marie instructing Jayne with the Ballet

Another Screen Shot I made this one shows Jayne Marie sittingon Mumma's lap and little Zachery is eating flowers at the far right

My Final Screen Shot. Jayne looked so lovely in this segment.

Super Rare Snap Shot of Jayne Mansfield Riding in The Indianapolis 500 Parade

This is as rare as they come. It's a colour snap shot taken from a member of the crowd. It sure is spectacular.
