Thoughts on New Jayne Documentary

OK, I am going to make this a quick post because I have talked about this documentary so many times now. Jayne Mansfield From Hollywood to Yorkshire finally arrived at my door this week. I watched it immediately and well naturally I loved it. Hearing everyone's stories of what they remembered about her trip to Yorkshire was my favorite part. There was plenty of archived footage and photos used but unfortunately nothing new apart from one photograph of Jayne among a crowd of people wearing a leopard coat. The photo isn't even that great as she is standing on her side and you can hardly see her face. But moving aside, I really did like it and am very happy that it was made. Now I would love to see a documentary on her trip to Brazil.

Jaynie's Pink Palace Book Review: The Gresh - A Lifetime in Show-Biz

This book is a short but sweet autobiography by Carl Gresham aka The Gresh. I have had this book in my collection for quite a while now. Seeing there is so much talk about Jayne's 1967 trip to Yorkshire of late I thought that I should at least mention this book for anyone who is not familiar with it.

Carl was working as a Press Relations Officer at the Batley Variety Club when Jayne came to town. Mention of Jayne in the book is brief. There is no lengthy chapter on Jayne but merely a small paragraph. There is one full page black and white photograph of Carl with Jayne (if I remember correctly access to this photo is on Carl Gresham's web page along with the three small images of Jayne holding puppies). However I am not greedy, I am at least glad that Carl mentioned Jayne and I was thrilled to see her grace the front cover. There are many other people mentioned in Carl's book however majority of them are British soap stars from the 70's whom I had never heard of so I can't say that I enjoyed the entire book. However I did at least stick through it til the end and there were parts that I did enjoy.

I am glad to have this item in my collection. I would recommend this book only for the real die hard Jayne Mansfield fans like myself who have to get their hands on anything to do with Jayne no matter how small the significance. Anyone only after new photographs or lengthy text on Jayne this book is not for you.

Pre Orders are in

I have just been told that my pre-order of Jayne Mansfield from Hollywood to Yorkshire is on its way. YAY!! Everyone else who have pre-ordered I assume the same goes for you. The dvd should arrive next week. I am so excited to see this documentary. I will be doing a review on it soon.

Jaynie's Pink Palace Book Review: La Dolce Vita - 60's Lifestyle in Rome

I realise it has been quite a while since my last book review so I thought I am much overdue for another one. This book is a beautiful large coffee table book and is also rather recent having been released in December 2011. It is much like La Dolce Vita - The Golden Age of Italian Style and Celebrity. The images in both books are sourced through the scala archives, they both feature American and European celebrities in Italy during the 50's and 60's and they both have covers featuring Jayne Mansfield. Personally I like this book more purely because it is much more thicker. Believe me, it's a huge book. And whereas the previous book featured 8 images of Jayne Mansfield this book has 11, most of which are full page beautiful black and white shots. Other celebrities featured in La Dolce Vita - 60's Lifestyle in Rome are Brigitte Bardot, Anita Ekberg, Audrey Hepburn, Liz Taylor, Sophia Loren, Dean Martin, Kirk Douglas, Frank Sinatra and many many more. There isn't much text, the only aspect adding to the volume of the text is the fact that you have the option of choosing from six different languages to read from, including English of course. It is a lovely book to have especially if you are very much into the lifestyle of Rome in the 1960's. The fact that Jayne and Mickey grace the front cover is really an added bonus to this wonderful coffee table book.

Jayne Mansfield watches Dior Show From the Front Row

Jayne Mansfield has finally been used in the form of a projection. She is featured in the new Dior Exhibit which is taking place in Normandy. Jayne sits in the front row and watches the models walk down the catwalk. A companion book for the exhibit titled 'Stars in Dior' will be released, I wonder how much of Jayne will be featured in the book if at all.

Jayne Sings in Italian on TV Show

Hi folks, its been a while since my last post because I have been away on Holiday. I had a wonderful trip but now I'm back and ready to post as many new and wonderful Jayne news as possible. Starting off with this glorious clip of the darling Jayne singing in Italian the song is called Quando Quando which translates to when when. I love her little wiggles as she sings the song superbly. Enjoy xx

"Ms Mansfield and Me" Feature Film

Yes, there is a film about Jayne Mansfield being penned as we speak. The script has been submitted to the European éQuinoxe Writers Workshop by Irish script writer Paul Walker (no,not the actor). The project is being supported with development funding from The Irish Film Board.

The film plot According to The Irish Film Television Network

"'Ms. Mansfield and Me’ tells the story of two brothers attempting to set up a five-star hotel in Tralee during the controversial Jayne Mansfield-debate in 1967. The Hollywood starlet’s scheduled cabaret appearance was cancelled due to the outrage of a local parish priest who persuaded residents of Tralee to rally around him."

If you ask me it sounds a little bit like the Mansfield version of 'My week with Marilyn' as in rather than a story about Jayne it is a small event in her life. I assume most of the story will be fiction but it seems like there may be some facts squeezed into the script too.

The script sounds interesting and unlike the upcoming "Jayne Mansfield's Car" this movie actually has something to do with Jayne. The progress of this movie I think is definitely something to keep an eye on.

Best Article on Jayne's UK visit

OK, so here is another article on Jayne's UK visit brought on by the new upcoming documentary which I have mentioned quite a few times now. This article is the best one so far. It mentions a few things which are new facts to me, if in fact they really are true. One, her becoming a pop star with John Lennon writing her songs and two, her wanting to star in the Broadway production of The Prince and the Showgirl. This article gives a good idea of what will be mentioned in the documentary. Which just makes me all the more excited.

The Legendary Jayne Mansfield Series of Mini Books

On the eve of Jayne Mansfield's 79th Birthday I am proud to announce a new project I have been working on which has finally been made possible through self publishing website Lulu. I have started a range of Jayne Mansfield mini books titled The Legendary Jayne Mansfield and issue number 1 "Pinup Queen" is now available for purchase. The series of books are not for profit, instead I wanted to bring something fun and different to all Jayne Mansfield fans with a price only covering the cost of printing. Adding to the cost and value of these books are not only black and white images but also stunning colour photographs too. Issue number one features famous pinup shots of Jayne. As I am not a schooled author my aim is to feature more images than text. Also I would like to feature not only well known images of Jayne but also the more rare shots too. All future issues/volumes will feature different topics while focusing on the subject of Jayne Mansfield. I have not yet decided how often I will be issuing the books, whether it be monthly or bimonthly however I can tell you that issue number two is sure to be better than the first with the subject being Jayne & Mickey.

I will keep you posted on all upcoming issues.

"Pinup Queen" is only available at http://www.lulu.com/shop/ashley-fulton/the-legendary-jayne-mansfield-issue-number-1-pinup-queen/paperback/product-20037629.html

Divas in Brazil

Divas in Brazil is a book written by Evanio Alves and is in Portuguese. I recently stumbled across this three page article about the book. At the end of the article it mentions that the book will arrive through amazon shortly so that makes me wonder if they may release an English edition. Which would be nice because surprise surprise, the reason I mention this book at all, is because there is mention of the gorgeous Jayne and her trip to Brazil.

Jaynie's Pink Palace Book Review: "Tashinesque - The Hollywood Comedies of Frank Tashlin"

I have just finished reading Tashlinesque and I admit I was incredibly impressed with this book. The author, Ethan de Seife takes a scholarly look into the life's work of Frank Tashlin. Beginning with his early career as a cartoonist, how he evolved into a motion picture director and how he directed many talented comedians like Bob Hope, Jerry Lewis, Tony Randall and of course Jayne Mansfield, and ending with his decline in popularity which lead to his retirement. This is not a biography at all. It is a very well written in depth look into the films he created. The book describes in detail the many gags and in some instances entire key scenes from his films. But enough of that, I'm sure the part you are wanting to hear most about is the Jayne Mansfield chapter, and yes there is a whole chapter devoted to his work with Jayne on what is commonly considered his best films ever "The Girl Can't Help It" and "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter".

"The Director and the Bombshell - Tashlin and Jayne Mansfield"
According to the author Jayne Mansfield's work with Frank Tashlin is not only her career making performance but also her finest, something I don't disagree with and I'm sure most other Jayne fans would agree with also. The chapter describes how Jayne Mansfield was the perfect vehicle for Tashin's style. It also compares her comedy work in the two Tashlin movies to her earlier non comedy films. The meaning and comedy behind many scenes is discussed including 'the stink' scene from TGCHI when Jerri tells Mr Murdoch she stinks over and over again while pushing her chest forward so much as to make Fats take a step back, 'the towel' scene from WSSRH in which Jayne uses her voice to comedic effect by changing her voice and tone. All the gags from TGCHI are mentioned including the Milk Bottles, Jayne hiding behind a shrub to change which does not hide her at all, the breakfast scene where only Jayne's torso is in camera view, the delivery man who melts a huge block of ice with his hands, the milk mans bottle of milk exploding and an on lookers glasses shattering. Tashlin's troubles with the censors and the measures he took to make sure his favorite scenes were kept while making Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter is also discussed in length.

All in all, I really enjoyed the book. It may not be the type of book for everyone however being a Jayne Mansfield fan I think that most would enjoy the chapter on the Mansfield movies. Perhaps if you are a fan of Hope or Lewis you will enjoy those chapters also. I found it interesting to finally get a look into the mind of a funny man whose work is sadly not well recognised these days.

The Breakfast scene from The Girl Can't
Help It is used as the cover for the book.

The binding also features Jayne so she will be visable from the bookshelf

Documentary on Photographer Robert Lebeck

Here is a very interesting short clip promoting a documentary on legendary German photographer Robert Lebeck. It shows his famous photograph of Mickey holding Jayne up to a chandelier so she can eat grapes off it. The remainder of the clip talks about his stunning images of famous Director Alfred Hitchcock.
