The Story Behind the Jayne Mansfield & Clint Eastwood Meeting

So we've all seen a handful of photos of Jayne Mansfield and Clint Eastwood on board a jet plane but the full story behind their meeting was never really published alongside the photographs. Below is the story you've been waiting to hear.

"A recent file of photos caught my eye when I recognized a young Clint Eastwood, but the shot’s setting seemed odd and I didn’t recognize anyone else. No written information was included on the back of the photos, but one of the subjects turned out to be actress Jayne Mansfield, the Hollywood actress and performer who was one of the best-known blonde bombshells of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
She and Eastwood were going to appear at San Francisco’s Barbary Coast Fandango, an Old West-themed festival sponsored by The San Francisco Chronicle and California Historical Society.
Eastwood and Mansfield were to join San Francisco Supervisors Peter Tamaras and Charles Ertola and artist Lorrie Bunker to judge the costume contest. Attendees could ride a Wells Fargo stage coach that was robbed 15 times by Black Bart, pan for gold or try to win a new sewing machine by finding a needle in a haystack. On the final day of the Fandango, Mansfield would present a trophy to the winners of the fast draw competition, one of the highlights for the lucky few who attended the Fandango along side the celebrities."

Goodbye to The Empress of China

This New Years Eve the Empress of China goes out with a bang. The restaurant was opened by Kee Joon Lee back in the 60's and he has been operating the business ever since. You will no doubt recognize the below image of Jayne signing the guest book with Kee Joon Lee by her side. The restaurant has always been very popular with bookings being made 2 years in advance for large functions. Sadly Kee lost his lease and the owners of the building are selling up for a cool $25 million. This Wednesday (New Years Eve) is the Empress' final day in operation. We say farewell to a well known and much loved Jayne Mansfield visited landmark.

Pete Kelly's Blues Gets Blu-Ray Release

The release of Pete Kelly's Blues on Blu-ray becomes the third of Jayne's films available on the high definition disc format. While Jayne's role is that of an extra in the film it is still nice to see it released in the modern format. Fingers crossed Fox get onto releasing The Girl Can't Help it in the near future.  However well done to Warner's for this new release.  We couldn't be happier.

Pre Order Merv Griffin Show DVD Box Set Featuring Jayne Mansfield

Great news. The Merv Griffin Show will be getting an official DVD release next month. Featured on the DVD is Jayne Mansfield's 1966 appearance. I know what you're thinking, "It's already on youtube". Well the full episode actually is not. Jayne appears on the segment more so than what is shown on youtube plus you won't have to watch it with that pestering watermark. If you have the episode on an old VHS recording, well the DVD is remastered and much better quality than any old vhs bootleg you might have in your collection. Trust me when I say this is something to get excited about. I know what I'll be asking for this Christmas. Amazon are taking pre-orders if you are interested in ordering.

Jayne Mansfield & Matt Cimber 50 Years Later

It has been fifty years since Jayne wed her third and final husband Matt Cimber in a quite ceremony in Mulege, Baja California Sur, Mexico on the 24th of September 1964. Unlike most occasions in Jayne's life her wedding to Cimber was not a press invited event and photos from the day are quite rare. Jayne wore plain clothes and a small white veil.

Today Matt Cimber lives in California with his wife Lynn Fero. He is currently working on a new film project and gives seminars to young film-making hopefuls.

Jayne Mansfield featured in White Shadows Exhibition

White Shadows is an upcoming exhibit held in Singapore.

In White Shadows, Sullivan continues to explore his long-held fascination with the west coast of America. In a series of new oil paintings, he paints Hollywood blondes from the early days of the silver screen, including Jean Harlow, Jayne Mansfield and Ida Lupino. Sullivan is fascinated by the way our shared imagination, language, actions and emotions are informed by film. These Hollywood starlets defined different kinds of femininity and created now familiar pop culture terms such as ‘Blonde Bombshell’ and ‘Platinum Blonde.’ They were as famous for their scandalous and often tragic lives as their movie careers. For example, an original sex symbol and screen siren, Jean Harlow died at 26 years of age and Jayne Mansfield was killed in a car accident aged 34. Sullivan continues to explore notions of tragic glamour in his photographic ‘still life’ works that function as contemporary vanitas: the bright beautiful flowers symbolically refer to the passing of time and the transience of nature.

50 Years Since Jayne Partied with The Beatles

On the 25th of August 1964 Jayne and husband Matt met with the Beatles at The Whisky-A-Go-Go. It is often believed that it was all Jayne's idea to meet with them to gain publicity. But in actual fact, it was they who wanted to meet Jayne. Upon arriving in the States one of the band members declared that the only movie star he wished to meet was Jayne Mansfield.  After the meeting they did not speak kindly of Jayne, I guess they wished to forget the whole ordeal as George received bad press that night for throwing a glass of water at a photographer, hitting not the photographer but Mamie Van Doren instead.

Happy Sweet 16 to Jayne's Granddaughter Jianni

We would like to take a moment to wish Jayne's granddaughter Jianni Cimber a very happy sweet 16. And to think Jayne got married at 16 years of age but of course times have changed considerably since then. Anywho we hope Jianni enjoys her special day.

Jayne Mansfield's Family Legacy

When asked to think of Jayne Mansfield's legacy I know many will think of her best movies, her publicity gimmicks or her thousands upon thousands of photographs left behind for future generations to enjoy. And yes those are all apart of her ultimate legacy. Jayne has been gone for 47 years and the majority of her fans today were not even born in her life time. This just proves the kind of lasting power Jayne has on this world. She might not be remembered to the heights of Marilyn Monroe, James Dean or Elvis Presley but that doesn't matter. She is strongly and fondly remembered by many and is constantly lapping up new fans. With that said it is in this blogger's opinion that Jayne Mansfield's first and foremost legacy on this world is in fact not the fame she still holds to this day but her family legacy. Jayne gave birth to 5 beautiful and healthy babies in her lifetime. Each of them grew up to have their own children. Jayne's eldest Jayne Marie is the only of Jayne's kids who is a grandparent. Here is a quick simple family tree I whipped up using information from various ancestry sites. It is not a complete family tree, but just a quick one to show her kids, grandkids and great grandkids. An extensive family tree would show all the spouses and their sides of their family (including the family of Mickey Hargitay's first born Tina) but today I just wanted to focus on the Jayne Mansfield descendants. I have been lucky enough to have spoken with a handful of Jayne's family members (in laws included) and they are a magical bunch of people, so warm and friendly and proud of everything Jayne did. Jayne truly did leave a beautiful legacy behind.

Jayne Mansfield Shaving T-Shirt

French label Vintedge Clothing has released  a t-shirt with an image of Jayne Mansfield shaving her face. Now the company might not know this (or even yourself for that matter) but there is actually a significance in the image because if anyone else out there has seen Jayne's 1966 Milton Berle episode in full you will remember that in one of the comedy skit segments Jayne is seen sitting in front of a mirror shaving her face in an attempt to feel like a man. Below is an image of the shirt that is for sale. It appears that they do not offer any international transactions however we have many French readers out there so perhaps there may be some eager fans to get this strange design t-shirt for their collections.

Wig Stylist Recounts Meeting with Jayne Mansfield

The Gleason job, for instance, came a couple of years after she first worked on a week’s worth of his shows that aired from Palm Beach. Actress and voluptuous pinup Jayne Mansfield was a guest on one, but she didn’t show up for rehearsal earlier in the day, finally breezing in around 7 p.m. for a show that would go on live in an hour. She wasn’t anything like camera-ready and kept roaming around her dressing room.
“I said, ‘Miss Mansfield, will you sit down and let me do your makeup? The whole world is waiting to see your beautiful face,’ ” Regina says. She and the star clicked, and Mansfield held the stylist’s pile of rollers, handing them off one at a time.
“At 10 to 8, she walked out. Jackie thought she was a vision. When it was all over and we were saying our goodbyes, I said, ‘If you ever come back to Miami, let me know.’ Two years later, I got the call,” she says.

Jayne Mansfield & Mickey Hargitay Fairytale Love

"Once upon a time a beefcake and a bombshell fell madly in love.
They started a family and lived in a pink castle.
While time and differences would separate their marital union,
they forever remained best friends and their mutual love for one another was strong.
Sadly tragic circumstances stole the bombshell away from the world.
The Beefcake found his soul mate and together they brought up his children with pride,
But he never forgot his bombshell, his best friend, his fairytale love."

This is their story, their true story, it is a sad story and some footage is not for the faint hearted, it will pull at your heart strings because this story really happened. I believe Mickey lived out the rest of his life with happiness. Mickey Hargitay left this world in 2006 and has since then been once again reunited with his best friend. May they both rest in peace.

The song teamed with the footage was not my original choice however the song I wished to use is blocked on youtube by the copyright holders so I thought this one was a nice substitute.

*Please note* the photo of Mickey holding a baby stated it to be second son Zoltan however it is actually first son Mickey Jr.

The time Jayne & Mamie Met Frankenstein

Really loving this well done artwork that is currently for sale on etsy.com in the form of a wall sticker. It shows Jayne & Mamie as they appeared in the Las Vegas Hillbilly's with Frankenstein joining them in their car ride. A really cool piece of pop art.

Jayne Mansfield Scene from Follow The Sun The Dumbest Blonde

Our latest video is a scene from Jayne's episode of Follow The Sun titled the Dumbest Blonde. In the scene Jayne is seen swimming, roasting marshmallows, hiding in the back seat of a car and playing dumb to a group of snobs at a snooty party. Jayne was a brilliant actress and she had the chance to prove her acting skills in episodes like this one (as well as Burke's Law & The Alfred Hitchcock Hour) more so than she did in the B grade movies she was cast in. If you have not seen this television appearance before, we hope you enjoy this scene.

Remembering Karlheinz Böhm 16 March 1928 - 29 May 2014

Karlheinz Bohm, often called Karl Boehm starred along side Jayne Mansfield in one of her best movies Too Hot to Handle. The film was one of many where Fox would loan Jayne out to to foreign film companies. Too Hot to Handle was filmed at Borehamwood Studios in the UK which was owned and operated by MGM. Karl was an Austrian actor who was most known in Austria and Germany. Later in life he became very active in charity work for people in need in Ethiopia. Karl was sadly suffering from Alzheimer's disease and passed away earlier this year at the age of 86. Like most of her co-stars Jayne got along really well with Karl. After wrapping up filming Jayne and Karl planned a farewell dinner with their spouses. The dinner was a publicity purpose wrap up. A reporter and photographer attended and it was reported in Film Revue. The magazine reported that the men were the ones cooking dinner however after waiting too long for dinner to be prepared the ladies took to the stove and carried on from where their husbands left off. A well panned out publicity gimmick indeed.

Jayne Mansfield In Ireland Photograph

Here is a gorgeous image of Jayne and Sam taken in 1967 in Tralee, Ireland without the usual Kennelly Archive watermark through the centre. Jayne is being interviewed by Bill O'Herlihy and other members of the Tralee press at the Brandon Hotel amid the controversy of having her act cancelled at the last minute.

Jayne Mansfield on The Jack Benny Show in 1963 Doing a Remake of Marilyn Monroe Episode

So far all of our YouTube video's have mostly been candid archive footage so we have decided to start including more of Jayne's television appearances starting with her 1963 appearance on the Jack Benny Show. Jayne's episode was titled Jack Takes Boat to Hawaii and was a remake of a Marilyn Monroe episode which had aired a decade prior titled Honolulu Trip. The Marilyn Monroe episode can be viewed on Youtube and if you compare the two performances you will see just how different these two beautiful  ladies were in their profession. Their acting techniques were completely different. Jayne who had not only acted in movies but stage work as well as hundreds of live television appearances beams with confidence and is right at home not only that but she looks absolutely radiant, Enjoy.

Jayne Mansfield Photographer Hope Powell Passes Away

Hope Powell, a photographer most known for shooting country music stars has recently passed away at the age of 90. Hope first began her career by shooting none other than our Jaynie.

Jayne was in town for one of her satirical strip shows and Hope had the honour of following Jayne around the audience taking photos of her seated in men's laps and would then sell them the photos.

Hope took this following image of Jayne with country music star Billy Crash Craddock at the Plantation Club in 1963 to which Jayne then personalised it to Crash.
